Dark Horse and Sky Dancer glared at each other where they stood near the edge of camp later that evening. She’d prepared a delicious meal of roasted pheasant with raspberry dressing and fresh greens. As a surprise, she’d brought some leached acorns with her from home that she’d made into a sweet mash.

Not only had he eaten the food with relish, but he’d been proud of Sky Dancer’s excellent cooking skills. His family had enjoyed the meal as well. Red Sun had praised Sky Dancer and they’d had a lively discussion about how she’d prepared it all. Rushing Bull had eaten with them and also complimented her.

Grudgingly, Three Deer had expressed appreciation and had even shown a little interest. Sky Dancer included her and offered to show her how to make the meal sometime again.

“Then you can make it for a boy you like,” she said, a teasing light in her eyes. “I am sure there is a handsome brave who has caught your eye.”

Three Deer had actually smiled and ducked her head a little. “Perhaps.”

Lightning flickered through the distant clouds gathering as darkness fell and the breeze picked up a little.

“No, and that is final!” Dark Horse said.

“Why? I do not see what the harm would be,” she signed back.

“You will be a distraction and you need distance. I held you while you cried this afternoon over how much it hurts to be away from your family. If you see them right now and then have to leave them again right away, it will make you feel worse,” he responded. “Besides, this is tribal business and does not concern you.”

“Not concern me? How can you say that? They are my people!”

His hand movements were emphatic. “I will not be swayed on this, so you might as well stop arguing.”

Sky Dancer realized that she was using the wrong tactic. Her former husband had been kind and sweeter-natured than Dark Horse, but he’d still had his stubborn moments. She’d learned how to handle a man when he was resistant to a woman’s wishes.

Taking a deep breath, she brought her temper under control, schooling her face into a dignified expression. “I was only thinking that I could help cook for you all. I am sure that they will bring
